Global Witness rejects claim that Zimbabwe diamonds are clean

State-sponsored violence and human rights abuses are still taking place in the diamond fields of eastern Zimbabwe, in contrast to claims made in a leaked report from the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme monitor, said Global Witness today. Global Witness has serious concerns about the credibility of the report, which recommends that Zimbabwe be allowed to resume diamond exports from the controversial Marange area.

Developed countries seeking loopholes to avoid emissions cuts at UN climate talks

BONN, Germany - Rich developed countries are attempting to cheat on accounting for their carbon emissions from logging and will only agree to ambitious overall greenhouse gas reduction targets if they get the forestry loopholes they demand, warned the Ecosystems Climate Alliance today. Under this unacceptable approach, the atmosphere would see substantially more emissions in greenhouse gases.

Independent monitoring vital to address governance and corruption in US$4 billion deal to end deforestation, new report says

Money pledged to help developing countries prevent deforestation and reduce carbon emissions is likely to be lost to corruption unless efforts are made from the outset to improve governance, law enforcement capacity and accountability, warned campaign group Global Witness in a new report published at the UN climate change negotiations in Bonn today. In advance of the latest round of climate talks, about $4bn was pledged for initiatives aimed at "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation" (REDD) between 2010 and 2012.

Rights groups express outrage at state persecution of Zimbabwean activists

Campaigners call for change of UN forest definitions to protect the climate

Bonn - As climate change negotiations resume here this week, a coalition of environmental campaigners has called on the UN's scientific and technological advisory body(1) to create a new forest definition that differentiates natural forests from plantations. This is needed to prevent global efforts to protect forests and the climate from being undermined, according to the Ecosystems Climate Alliance (ECA).

International donors must act on entrenched natural resource-related corruption in Cambodia

Read the Cambodian Embassy's response to this press release Cambodia's international donors must tackle head on the gross mismanagement of the country's natural resources at tomorrow's government-donor meeting, campaign group Global Witness said today. Donors gave Cambodia $1bn in aid last year, despite evidence of widespread corruption and mismanagement of public funds and repeated failures to implement promised reform.
