Congo Now! campaign marks 50 years of independence for the Democratic Republic of Congo

With the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) set to celebrate 50 years of independence on June 30th, the Congo Now! campaign is launching a series of events to celebrate the rich creativity of the Congolese people and raise awareness of the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in the east of Congo.

Global Witness and PAC reject Zimbabwe diamond bribe allegations

Campaign groups Global Witness and Partnership Africa Canada (PAC) today categorically rejected allegations that they offered to support Zimbabwe's bid to resume diamond exports in exchange for a 1% cut of the profits. The allegation surfaced at the end of the week-long meeting of the Kimberley Process (KP) diamond certification scheme, where Zimbabwe's compliance with the scheme's minimum requirements was hotly debated.

Campaigners denounce effort to silence whistle-blower

The Kimberley Process 10 years on - watch our presentation The Zimbabwe authorities should immediately release Farai Maguwu, a prominent activist who reported abuses in Zimbabwe's notorious Marange diamond fields, the Kimberley Process Civil Society Coalition said today. The call comes just before a June 21 meeting in Tel Aviv of the Kimberley Process (KP), an international government-led certification scheme established to prevent the trade in blood diamonds.

UNESCO should cancel 'Dictator Prize' once and for all

London, June 15, 2010 - UNESCO's decision today to delay awarding a controversial prize named after and funded by the dictator of Equatorial Guinea is a positive initial step, civil society groups said. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced June 15, 2010, that its executive board, consisting of 58 countries, approved Director-General Irina Bokova's proposal to postpone the award and instead engage in consultations to consider the prize's future.

Haste, corruption, lack of transparency pave a rocky road for REDD

BONN, Germany – Developments at global climate talks this week highlight the volatile mix of haste, corruption and lack of transparency confronting global efforts to address climate change by protecting forests. After nearly two years of negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), the chair, Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe of Zimbabwe, told observers this week that a decision to advance “readiness” for REDD could be one of the few concrete outcomes at the upcoming conference in Cancun, Mexico in December.

Discussions on reducing deforestation take place behind closed doors while developed countries seek to hide emissions

BONN, Germany - While only one meeting on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) was held at the UN climate talks which end here today, numerous discussions on a parallel initiative outside the UN framework occurred behind closed doors, warned forest and climate experts from the Ecosystems Climate Alliance today.

The United Nations Convention Against Corruption Civil Society Coalition, composed of almost 200 organizations committed to fighting corruption and promoting human rights worldwide, has written an open letter to the UN expressing its concern over the UNESCO-Obiang prize.

Global Witness welcomes Liberian government investigation into carbon deal

Global Witness today welcomed the establishment by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of a committee to investigate the proposed carbon credit deal between the country's Forest Development Authority (FDA) and UK-based Carbon Harvesting Corporation. This follows Global Witness' own investigation and the subsequent arrest of the CEO of Carbon Harvesting Corporation, Mike Foster, by the City of London Police.
