Kimberley Process lets Zimbabwe off the hook (again)

The Kimberley Process (KP) has thrown away its main point of leverage over the Zimbabwean government by allowing it to export diamonds from the controversial Marange region without first fulfilling previous commitments to reform its diamond trade, said the Kimberley Process Civil Society Coalition of NGOs today.

Three years after the near collapse of the international banking system and as it faces new instability, the governments of the Group of 20 leading economic powers (G20) must focus on the underlying, systemic causes of the current financial crisis. A first step should be the enforcement of measures to ensure financial transparency. 140 governments pledge to tackle dictators’ loot in wake of Arab Spring

Marrakesh - Today 140 governments acknowledged systemic failures in the controls that should stop banks taking dictators’ money, in a move welcomed by anti-corruption campaigners Global Witness and Sherpa. The resolution, initiated by Egypt and passed at a UN anti-corruption conference which focused heavily on the Arab Spring, also agreed more action was needed to help claw back stolen funds.

UNESCO: Obiang prize suspended again

The decision by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s executive board on October 4, 2011, to defer any action on a highly controversial life sciences prize named after and funded by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea blocked a move to reinstate the prize immediately, but the board should eliminate the prize permanently, six civil society organizations said today.

Time for countries to honour promises on forest protection at UN talks

Developed countries must honour previous agreements by committing the billions of dollars needed to fund a key United Nations initiative to protect the world's remaining forests and prevent irreversible climate change, said Global Witness as fresh climate change negotiations begin in Panama today. They must also agree systems and conditions to ensure the money is used well by forest protection programs in recipient countries.
