Leaders of the G8 countries will gather in Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland between 17–18 June 2013 for the 39th G8 summit. Leading transparency campaigners welcome UN development report

Leading transparency and access to information campaigners including CAFOD, Global Witness, Integrity Action and Publish What You Fund, today welcomed a new UN report as driving progress towards enhanced citizen accountability around the world. The report by the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on Post-2015 Development Agenda calls for a ‘data revolution’, proposes a goal to ‘Ensure Good Governance and Effective Institutions’ and puts transparency, accountability and people’s participation at the heart of the new framework.

HSBC may face more severe penalty for money laundering failures

There is a possibility that US authorities may be forced to consider a more severe penalty for HSBC than previously expected for money laundering charges, said Global Witness today. Last December the bank agreed with the US authorities to pay a $1.9 billion fine as part of a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) to settle charges that the bank had violated US laws. However the judge responsible for signing-off on the DPA has yet to do so.

Bill Oddie attending HSBC AGM to grill directors over role in Borneo rainforest destruction and corruption scandals as bank’s profits soar

Naturalist and comedian Bill Oddie will today attend the HSBC annual general meeting to seek answers from the board of directors over the bank’s lending to companies destroying Borneo’s rainforests. The companies that HSBC has lent to have been at the forefront of a timber and palm oil bonanza that has left less than 5 per cent of the Malaysian state of Sarawak’s rainforests unaffected by logging or plantations.

Liberian government publishes landmark resource audit, but urgently needs to address findings

Publication of a full audit of how Liberia awarded its resource concessions between 2009 and 2011 is a global first, said campaigning watchdog Global Witness today. The audit, which was published last week, reveals significant violations of Liberia's laws that the government now urgently needs to address.

Global Witness calls on Shell to drop support for anti-transparency lawsuit

Litigation runs contrary to the UK G8 Presidency’s push for a global transparency standard Global Witness is attending Shell’s AGM in The Hague today to ask the company to drop its support for a lawsuit that aims to kill off vital a U.S. transparency law. While the UK uses its G8 Presidency to advance a global transparency standard for oil and mining companies, the lawsuit seeks to stifle disclosure and move the industry in the opposite direction.
