Secretive plans to sell a lucrative Congolese mining asset raise further Congo corruption concerns

New reports indicate that the Democratic Republic of Congo’s state-owned mining company, Gécamines, is in an advanced stage of negotiations to sell its stake in a lucrative copper mine without informing the Congolese Ministry of Mines. If true, this would follow a pattern of opaque deals in Congo mining sector giving rise to concerns about poor value for money and possible corruption, said Global Witness today.

Timber giant Dalhoff Larsen and Horneman caught importing more than $300,000 of illegal Liberian timber

Danish timber giant Dalhoff Larsen and Horneman (DLH) purchased illegal timber worth $304,870 from Liberia in 2012, Global Witness revealed today. One of the world's leading international timber and wood product wholesalers, the company previously bought conflict timber financing the government of recently convicted war criminal Charles Taylor during the country’s brutal civil war.

Liberia: Urgently Reform Libel Laws

Liberia should promptly revise its libel laws to meet international standards for freedom of expression and the media, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Global Witness said today in a letter to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The groups urged President Sirleaf to press for the reform of libel laws and procedure to prevent excessive judgments and restrictions on appeals from undermining free speech rights.

Global Witness criticises easing of EU diamond sanctions

Global Witness today responded to news that the EU has agreed to lift sanctions on the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation. “The EU has rushed its decision to delist ZMDC before the dust has settled on Zimbabwe’s flawed elections. Our research indicates that ZANU PF and the military have siphoned revenues from ZMDC’s diamond ventures and that this may have financed the alleged rigging of the recent poll,” said Senior Campaigner, Emily Armistead.
