Global Witness condemns the Trump Administration’s attacks on the grant maker Open Society Foundations as a politically motivated attempt to censor speech the US government doesn't like
This follows recent reports that the United States Department of Justice has instructed federal prosecutors to investigate OSF – the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for rights, equity, and justice – with the administration making false claims about the foundation and its founder George Soros.
Non-profit organisations working to improve civil liberties, healthcare, housing, education, religious services, food and water in the US have come under increasing attack from the White House since the start of President Trump’ second term.
Global Witness CEO Mike Davis said:
“Trump’s recent attacks on civil society should be seen for what they are: politically motivated attempts to silence speech the administration disagrees with.
“With neither fear nor favour, Global Witness is committed to independent, investigative campaigning to expose and challenge those profiting from climate breakdown and environmental destruction.
“For this mission, we are proud to receive funds from a grant maker like OSF, a lawful and peaceful organisation, dedicated to strengthening democracy and upholding freedoms around the world.”
In a statement, OSF has unequivocally condemned terrorism and confirmed its activities are peaceful and lawful, with all grantees expected to abide by human rights principles and comply with the law.
