12th October 2023, London – Global Witness Statement on Ofgem's Proposal on Potential Energy Bill Hikes
Alice Harrison, Fossil Fuels Campaign Leader at Global Witness, stated:
“Yes, you read that right – households already bearing the brunt of the fossil-fuelled energy crisis may be asked to bail out energy companies that have either raked in massive profits or made poor market choices.
“With over 3.5 million households grappling with fuel poverty, the government must step in and tell Ofgem not to hike bills, which would boost the coffers of companies like British Gas, which reported a staggering profit of £969m for the first half of 2023 — an increase of almost 900% from the £98m during the same period the previous year.
“It's high time the government takes decisive action, offering support this winter for those in fuel poverty and a introduce a "Help To Repay” scheme to help households get back on their feet.”
