Global Witness reaction to formation of new UK government

Global Witness CEO Gillian Caldwell said, “Theresa May campaigned on a promise to keep the country safe. She has also told the public that the laundering of criminal funds by the UK’s banks, law firms and property market fuels instability, supports terrorism and threatens our national security. Yet she starts her new government planning to merge the Serious Fraud Office with the National Crime Agency, which will strip back our capacity to tackle the problem. To keep her word to the British public, she must guarantee the independence of the SFO and set out her plan to address the drivers of corruption and financial crime in this country."
