20th November 2019, London – Commenting on the Conservative Party Press Office “rebranding” as a fact checker account, Ava Lee, Senior Campaigner at Global Witness, said:
“At a time when trust in politics is already at rock bottom it is frankly appalling that the party of government thought it was acceptable to rebrand its press office as a fact checking service – the exact tool we need to help navigate this kind of misinformation and propaganda. This was clearly a deeply cynical move to distort the online conversation in favour of Boris Johnson.”
“It doesn’t have to be this way. If politicians and political parties care about democracy, and have any respect for the people they want to vote for them, they should commit to fighting a clean election from now on - and put an immediate end to these dirty tactics.”
