Global Witness calls for immediate release of Congo human rights activist

Global Witness today appealed to the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to release human rights activist Golden Misabiko without delay ahead of a court hearing due to take place on Wednesday. Misabiko has remained in detention for over three weeks in relation to the recent publication of a report, despite repeated calls for his release by Congolese and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

‘Resource Curse’ should be key focus of Clinton’s Africa visit

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton should put a strong emphasis on how best to manage natural resource wealth and avoid conflict and corruption on her official tour of Africa this week, said campaign group Global Witness today. Among the seven countries she will visit, Angola, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria are key examples of how abundant natural resource wealth - such as oil, minerals, and timber - can be more of a curse than a blessing, causing or exacerbating conflict and corruption.

Global Witness backs calls for halt to Zimbabwe diamond trade

Campaign group Global Witness today welcomed calls for the suspension of Zimbabwe from the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, set up to stop the trade in blood diamonds, and called on participant governments to act to stop to human rights abuses taking place in Zimbabwe's diamonds fields and restore the credibility of the landmark scheme.

British government must do more to control companies

Campaign group Global Witness will today present oral evidence to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Business and Human Rights in a last minute addition to the hearing schedules. To complement Global Witness' written submission and the earlier testimonies of NGOs on 9 June 2009, Gavin Hayman, Director of Campaigns, and Seema Joshi, Legal Advisor, will focus on the UK Government's role in preventing abuses by UK based companies operating in conflict affected areas.

Governments urged to renew commitments as diamond meeting closes

A coalition of civil society organisations acknowledged some progress at the close of the sixth Intersessional meeting of Kimberley Process Certification Scheme in Windhoek, Namibia this week but said that more action was needed from governments to ensure the scheme's effectiveness. The government-led scheme was established in 2003 to prevent the trade in blood diamonds but has faced challenges since its inception.
