U.S. move to ban top Cambodian officials exposes failure of Europe, Australia and Japan to get tough on corruption

Anti-corruption NGO Global Witness today welcomed the news that the United States government has endorsed travel sanctions on top Cambodian officials, and called on other countries to follow suit. Despite giving large amounts of development aid to Cambodia, other countries in Europe, such as the UK, France and Germany, as well as Japan and Australia, have failed to take tough action in response to reports of high-level institutional corruption in Cambodia.

Review of Congo mining contracts marred by lack of transparency

The integrity of a governmental review of mining contracts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is being undermined by a lack of transparency and pressure to rush through the process as fast as possible, Global Witness said in a new briefing published today. Global Witness is calling on the government to publish the contracts, as well as the criteria for their evaluation, and to extend the period available for the review.

Germany must launch full inquiry into Turkmen funds in German banks

Global Witness calls on the German government to launch a full inquiry into accounts held in German banks by the Central Asian dictatorship of Turkmenistan, because of unanswered questions about what the money was used for. Last week, Turkmenistan's new President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov raised new questions about the role of German banks when he called for the abolition and audit of ‘the International Fund of Saparmurat Niyazov'. The Associated Press reported that the fund, set up in 1993, is ‘managed by German banks'.

21/03/07 Statement by Dr Sarah Wykes of Global Witness Dr Sarah Wykes, a British national and senior campaigner at Global Witness, was arrested in Angola on 18th February 2007 while visiting the country to assess the transparency of its oil sector. She is being investigated under an Angolan national security law. Dr Wykes was allowed to leave Angola on bail and returned to the United Kingdom on 18th March. However, the case against her continues. Global Witness is issuing the following statement by Dr Wykes:
