Proposed changes to Liberian forest laws would open way for devastating logging and slash government revenues

Changes to Liberia's forestry law proposed by the Liberian Timber Association (1) would dramatically reduce revenue for the state and are not in the best interests of the country. Global Witness has received a list of amendments that Liberian logging companies would like to see made to the country's forestry law. Among them are proposals to cut their rate of tax and a proposal to reinstate concessions that were cancelled following the civil war.

Secret documents reveal multi-million dollar shopping spree by African dictator’s son; U.S. authorities fail to act on evidence of corruption

Confidential U.S. government documents uncovered by campaign group Global Witness and reported on in today's New York Times, strongly suggest that Teodorin Obiang, son of the dictator of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea, purchased a $33 million private jet, a $35 million Malibu mansion, speedboats and a fleet of fast cars using corruptly acquired funds.

Global Witness welcomes French "Angolagate" verdict as victory for justice

A Paris court's decision to convict 36 people in connection to illegal arms sales to Angola during its civil war in the 1990s, including arms dealers, middlemen and French politicians, is a victory for the rule of law and Angolan victims of the conflict, Global Witness said today. "Justice has prevailed despite Angolan government attempts to stop the case," said Simon Taylor of Global Witness, which has been investigating corruption in Angola since 1999. The country is rich in oil but its people mostly live in dire poverty.

IMF risks condoning corruption with new loan to Angola

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) should not go ahead with plans for a multi-million dollar loan to Angola, whose oil-rich government is highly corrupt, without stringent conditions that require the opening up of the country's oil industry to public scrutiny, the anti-corruption watchdog Global Witness said ahead of the IMF's Annual Meeting in Turkey.

North and south Sudan to investigate oil figures following Global Witness report

One week after the launch of its report on the lack of transparency in the oil revenue sharing agreement between north and south Sudan, campaign group Global Witness has welcomed a public commitment by the Government of Southern Sudan to support a full, independent audit of oil revenues.
