The rising demand for transition minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper has placed mineral-rich countries at the heart of geopolitical competition

As nations pursue energy transitions, mining corporations and investors race to secure deposits for profit. Meanwhile, marginalised and underserved communities and defenders living close to mining sites face the worst consequences, risking their lives to uphold their rights amidst this global power struggle.
Clean energy is a promise of a sustainable future, but without addressing systemic inequalities in mining practices, past patterns of exploitation and environmental harm will be repeated.
Since the launch of Global Witness’s Transition Mineral campaign in late 2022, the goal has been to ensure that the energy transition is fair and responsible to people and planet.
This involves promoting inclusive decision-making processes, strengthening investment and supply chain standards, and ensuring that communities receive their fair share of benefits. This is what we mean by a just transition.
This Impact Case Study aimed to understand and articulate two areas of change that Global Witness is contributing to through its Transition Minerals campaign.
