Every year around the world, people and their communities are murdered, disappeared and attacked for trying to protect their homes, land and the environment

These land and environmental defenders – many of whom are Indigenous Peoples, Afrodescendant, farmers, community leaders, journalists, lawyers and Indigenous Peoples – are targeted for daring to resist environmental exploitation.

Those responsible – often state, corporate or criminal actors – are rarely held to account for their crimes.

Since the launch of its Land and Environmental Defenders (LED) campaign, Global Witness has played an important role in amplifying the voices of land and environmental defenders, accelerating international dialogue and action to prevent harm to defenders, and enhancing corporate accountability for defender-related harms.

This Impact Case Study aims to understand and articulate two areas of change that we are contributing to through its Land Environment Defenders campaign.
