As we approach the end of 2024, it’s clear that global leaders have once again missed the opportunity to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis

In Europe, industry pressure has obstructed landmark legislation meant to clamp down on deforestation.

Across Southeast Asia, we’ve seen rising criminalisation of land and environmental defenders fighting on the frontlines against ecological destruction.

In the US, climate deniers stand poised to fill the halls of government.

How did we get here? More importantly, how do we fix it?

The fossil fuel industry and their backers have spent billions denying responsibility for the climate crisis and tightening their grip on lawmakers, who have let them get away with far too much for far too long.

Over the years, this unrelenting fossil fuel lobbying has managed to stall meaningful climate action that would ensure a safe future on our planet.

And now, with the just energy transition picking up pace, the oil and gas industry are betting their future on false climate solutions, plastic production and greenwash.

We won’t stand for it. To build a safe future for humanity, we must resist these distract and delay tactics with evidence and integrity.

At Global Witness, we expose the power and influence of big polluters and push for systemic change.

We are seasoned leaders in the fight to remove any trace of fossil fuel lobbyists from global climate efforts and ensure that the voices of communities most affected by climate are heard.

We’re building a global movement for corporate accountability – and that starts with people like you joining us to take a stand.

With your support, we can continue to investigate this massive and powerful industry and expose their wrongdoing.

“acted more like intelligence agents…”

If you’ve followed our work for a while, you’ll know we aren’t afraid to rock the boat, fighting back against powerful institutions with hard-hitting investigations and exposing corrupt and dangerous practices.

That’s why when we hear powerful people call us things like “a bunch of well-intentioned hooligans” (says one diamond industry official) or “part of a global Machiavellian plot” (the MPLA Government, Angola), we know we’re on the right track.

Most recently, the Azerbaijani parliament voiced their strong displeasure at our investigations into COP29, issuing a statement that read: “Global Witness employees acted more like intelligence agents than members of a non-governmental organization.”

It turns out they didn’t appreciate our undercover investigation that exposed the CEO of COP29 using sponsorship talks to discuss new oil and gas deals.

We are proud to be the thorn in the side of those who would prefer to operate in the shadows.

We’ve spent three decades honing our investigative skills, developing cutting-edge data and financial analysis.

All of which is only possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

To continue going toe-to-toe with the industry giants driving climate destruction, we need the support of everyone who believes in our mission. If you can, please donate today.
