Global Witness has had an office in Washington, D.C. for over 15 years. We are campaigning for the US government to:
- Curb corruption and conflicts of interest in political decision-making
- Root out the influence of money in politics
- Bring transparency and accountability to the US oil and gas industry at home and abroad
- Put the public interest ahead of polluting industries
Global Witness investigations into corruption and secret dealings in the oil industry and campaigns with other civil society groups paved the way for creation of a ground-breaking law in the US, the Cardin-Lugar anti-corruption provision.
This requires oil, gas and mining companies that are listed in the US to publish their payments to governments wherever they operate in the world. Although the provision has come under fierce attack in the US, it inspired the EU, Canada and Norway to adopt similar laws.
Our campaigning also led to the US leading the world in passing the “conflict minerals” provision - commonly known as Section 1502 of the Dodd Frank Act - in 2010. This provision requires US publicly-listed companies to check their supply chains for tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold.
In recent years, we have investigated conflicts of interest and money laundering red flags in President Trump’s business dealings - including a major expose, Narco-a-Lago: money laundering at the Trump Ocean Club, Panama. We’ve also uncovered conflicts of interest in the Trump administration, which threaten to undermine key institutions.
